Prime Recruitment Ltd will ensure that a practical safe knowledge process is in place for all staff. This is in line with current legislation and standards required for safe working.
Policy Aim
Prime recruitment Ltd will ensure and outline the systems that staff must follow to ensure the health and safety of staff, the Client’s Service Users and others when moving and handling people, equipment or objects.
Responsibility
It is the responsibility of the Manager and Director to bring the policy to the attention of all staff members, and if requested that this policy is made available to the Clients using the services of Prime Recruitment Ltd Homecare.
Staff members:
All staff members must make sure that they read this policy and attend the Moving and Handling training, which is also to be renewed annually. The staff member must also ensure that they understand the safe working procedures and report any concerns straightaway to the person in charge of running the shift, and the Manager or Director of Prime Recruitment Ltd.
Policy aims
Prime Recruitment Ltd, will provide training for staff around the important safety of the Client’s Service Users, staff and others when lifting, putting down, pushing, pulling, carrying or moving people, equipment or objects by hand or by bodily force.
However, some staff might have been trained by their regular employer and not by Prime Recruitment Ltd. It is important that staff provide evidence of their face to face moving and handling training certificate, and provide this evidence to the Manager or Director.
Prime Recruitment Ltd train staff in how to move or handle people, equipment or objects correctly and safely. In return, Prime Recruitment Ltd expects staff to be aware of their own strengths, weaknesses and safety, and to avoid moving and handling if they feel this is unsafe. Staff must inform the person in charge of running the shift and the Manager or Director at Prime Recruitment Ltd around all concerns.
Scope: The legislation and guidance staff must adhere to includes:
· Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
· Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
· Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992.
Staff are expected to adhere to this legislation through implementation of the policy and procedures developed to remove or reduce the risk of injury to staff.
Staff are expected to report any moving and handling incident, however minor, to the Registered Manager who will ensure that all reported incidents are recorded in the appropriate accident and incident records.
Risk Assessment
The Care/Residential or Nursing home Manager, will carry out a risk assessment, prior to moving or handling people, equipment or objects, of the likelihood of harm occurring and the severity of harm that might be inflicted should it occur.
The Care/Residential or Nursing home Manager will put in place processes and procedures for the measurement of risk, to determine control measures to prevent back or other injury from occurring. These include:
1. Removing the hazard altogether.
2. Try an option that is less in risk.
3. Provide safe systems of work.
Use of Moving and Handling Equipment
One of the control measures may be to use moving and handling equipment. If this is the case, the Care/Residential or Nursing home Manager should:
Carry out an assessment to identify and use the most appropriate equipment for the moving and handling required.
Make sure staff have been and are trained to use the equipment.
Make sure the equipment is maintained according to the manufacturer’s suggestions and requirements.
Moving and Handling Training
Prime Recruitment Ltd will organise for staff to receive moving and handling training in the following areas:
Identifying manual handling risk factors and how injuries can occur.
How to carry out safe manual handling including good handling technique.
Appropriate systems of work to suit your staff and service users.
The use of mechanical aids.
Staff are required to attend this training and any update training identified as a result of reviews.
However, some staff might have been trained by their regular employer and not by Prime Recruitment Ltd. It is important that staff provide evidence of their face to face moving and handling training certificate, and provide this evidence to the Manager or Director.
Accident and Incident Reporting
Prime Recruitment Ltd expects all their staff to recognise and report accidents, incidents and near misses to the person in charge of running the shift and the Manager or Director of Prime Recruitment Ltd.
Support for staff member
If a staff member has work related concerns or requires support, around the Moving and Handling procedures, they are to speak with the person in charge of running the shift. Staff must also report any concerns or support required to the Manager or Director at Prime Recruitment Ltd.
